Google recently expanded its mapping services to include the UK. In addition to street maps and directions the new service offers detailed satellite views of cities and towns including Maybole. Shown here are three views of Maybole using the selections in the top right corner of the map windows. All three views allow zooming in and out of the map using the controls provided in the top left side of the map window.

We're excited to announce that we have just launched beta versions of maps for France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. These sites include the full suite of interactive street maps, driving directions, and integrated local business search. This has been a global effort with Google teams in Paris, Hamburg, Milan, Madrid, New York, Mountain View, Kirkland, Sydney, London, Dublin, and Zurich working together for much of the past year to build a truly "local" product.

Accompanying this release, we have greatly improved high resolution imagery coverage for Europe in both maps and earth. Check out the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Olympiastadion in Berlin, and the Grand Canal in Venice.

To give you a preview of what's to come, we've also rendered street maps for many other countries in Europe. Developers, you can incorporate these maps and imagery into your own websites using the free maps API Version 2.

12. Info window - This window displays additional information when you click a marker or search result.

Navigating in maps

You can navigate (move your view) in two dimensions in any map. To pan (move the map), do one of the following:

• Click and drag the map
• Press the up arrow on your keyboard to move north
• Press the down arrow on your keyboard to move south
• Press the right arrow on your keyboard to move east
• Press the left arrow on your keyboard to move west

Additionally, you can zoom in or out pressing the + or - keys. Move the cursor over a location and use the mouse scroll button to zoom in or out on that location. To center and zoom in on a location, double click the location.

Using the Navigation Controls

The navigation controls you see at maps.google.com are shown on the left. Navigation controls include: Arrows - Click the appropriate arrow buttons to move the view north, south, east or west. Click to return to your original view. Zoom - Click + to zoom in on the center of the map. Click - to zoom out. Zoom slider - Drag the zoom slider up or down to zoom in or out incrementally. Other web pages with embedded maps may not have all or any of these navigation controls. For example, embedded maps may show navigation controls that look like those below:

About the Left Panel

The left panel shows search results, My Maps and additional information about items on the map. To hide this panel, click on the border of this panel. To display a hidden left panel, click .

About Markers

Markers appear in maps to signify an important location. For example, when you search for an address, maps shows you the address location with a marker. Types of markers include:

			After you search for an address or business, this marker shows the location of a business.
			After you search for an address or business, this marker shows the approximate location of a business.
			After you search for a business, this marker shows the location of a sponsored business (advertisement).
			When you get directions, this marker shows a destination point within your route.
			This marker shows the number and location of a highway exit.
			After you search for and display user-created content, this marker shows the location of this content (learn more).

maps Using the Overview Map

The overview map (shown left here) appears in the bottom right corner of the map. It helps orient you by showing the location of current map view in the context of a larger geographical area. The area currently displayed in the map is show as a purple box in the overview map. At any time, click to hide the overview map or click to display it again. As you pan or zoom in the map, the overview map view changes accordingly. You can change the existing view in the map by doing one of the following: Drag and drop the purple box in the overview map. Drag and drop the area outside the purple box to pan the map.

You can also create directions to and from markers and search results. To do this:

1. Search maps.
2. Do one of the following:

• Click a marker in the map.
• Click a search result in the left panel

3. In the info window, click To here or From here.
4. Add another destination using steps 2 and 3.

Getting Public Transit Directions maps

You can find public transportation routes as part of your directions. To do this:

1. Get directions (see above).
2. Click Take Public Transit (top of the left panel). maps suggests up to four trips for you to take, which may contain different modes of transportation. For example, one trip may include a train while another includes a bus. Click a trip to see the route displayed on the map.
3. To customize your search:
   1. Click Options.
   2. Enter your date and departure or arrival time.
   3. Click Update.

Adding Destinations to Directions maps

You can add multiple destinations to your directions. For example, you can create directions that stop at three or more locations. To do this:

1. Create directions for the first two destinations of your trip.
2. At the bottom of the left panel, click Add Destination and enter an address. Or right-click on the map and choose Add destination to add that location to your directions.
3. Repeat Step 2 to add another destination.

Customizing Your Directions maps

Once you have created your directions, you can customize your exact route. You can:

• Avoid or include certain road or locations in your directions
• Compare the route, distance and mileage of different routes
• Route around bad traffic

You can customize your directions by adding a destination or dragging the directions. Each time you drag your directions, you add a destination as part of the route.

To drag your directions:

1. Create a set of directions.
2. Click and drag any point on the purple directions line to any location of the map. maps immediately re-creates the directions on both the map and left panel. The point you added appears as a white dot on the route. Note that maps also updates the estimated travel time and distance.
3. To add additional destinations by repeating Step 2.
4. Move a destination, drag a marker to another location on the map.

Viewing Additional Content maps

Depending on your location, you can view location-specific photos and Wikipedia articles in maps (example). To do this:

1. Navigate to a location.
2. Click More and check the appropriate option(s). Photos appear as thumbnails and Wikipedia articles appear as W icons. Click an icon to expand the photo or article.
