Using Saved Locations maps

If you have a Google account and are signed in, each location you search appears in the Saved Locations list. maps uses locations in this list to suggest entries in the Search Maps field as you type.

Your five most recent searches appear in the left panel of maps. To view your saved locations, click the arrow beside the search box at the top of the page. You can do the following:

• Add, edit, or delete a location (Click Edit saved locations).
• Customize your locations by adding labels to them. Each label is used to generate suggestions from your list of saved locations.
• Set your default location by clicking one of the green arrows.
• Enable or disable auto-saving of your searches.

maps adds India

The maps team has made a huge launch of streets, roads and place names for the country of India! Take a look

Previous to this launch India showed a vast white space with the "Map" view toggled on making only satellite imagery available. The street maps that have been added for Indian cities also show symbols for various amenities such as hotels, police stations, cinemas and more. This is a significant addition for maps due to the size of the population in India that will be able to take advantage of this new mapping data. Also, expats living abroad can now use the hybrid view to zoom in and look at their home city or town. This expanded data is not yet available for maps API sites, but once it is (and it should be very soon) the following sites should improve their usability and coverage for India. The maps mashup activity should definitely pick up in India as well, now that there is some location context to points which are plotted:

Wikimapia (India) - Individuals will now be able to positively identify structures and places with map and hybrid views put to use. This will greatly expand the number of described places on this great service.

Sightseeing with Google Satellite Maps (India) - This list should also fill up with more places confirmed.

maps Adding and Editing Placemarks

To add a placemark to your map:

1. Create or open a map.
2. Click . Your cursor changes into a placemark icon with an "X" crosshairs. The crosshairs indicate where the placemark will fall.
   
   
   
3. Move the cursor to the appropriate location. If you want to dismiss this placemark, press the Escape key.
4. Click your mouse button to place your placemark. It should bounce into place.
5. Add a title and description.
6. You can also change the icon for your placemark by clicking the icon in the top right corner of the info window. You can also add your own icon.
7. Click OK to save your placemark.

To move or edit a placemark:

1. Click Edit in the left panel.
2. Drag and drop the appropriate placemark to the new location. Note that you can only edit or move placemarks on your maps, not others.
3. To edit a placemark's title or description, click on it to open the info window. Edit the title and description and click OK.
4. Click Done in the left panel when you are finished.

To add a shape to your map:

1. Create or open a map.
2. Click . Your cursor appears like this:
   
   
   
3. Move the cursor to the appropriate location and click to start the shape. If you want to dismiss this shape, press the Escape key.
4. Click your mouse button at each end point of your shape.
5. To finish drawing your shape, double click the last end point or click on the starting point to complete the shape.
6. Add a title and description.
7. You can also change the color and opacity of your shape by clicking the color swatch in the top right corner of the info window.
8. Click OK to save your shape.

To edit a shape:

1. Click Edit in the left panel.
2. To move a shape on your map, mouse over the shape to make the end points appear. Click and drag the points to move them.
3. To delete a point from your shape, right-click on the point and select Delete from the context menu.
4. To add a point to your shape, you can either click on one of the semi-transparent points, or right-click on the shape and choose Add a point from the context menu.
5. To edit a shape's title or description, click on it to open the info window. Edit the title and description and click OK.
6. Click Done in the left panel when you are finished.

maps Adding Photos

You can add photos to your map, as long as they are hosted online. Please use a service such as Google PicasaWeb to put your photos online.

To add photos:

1. Create or open a map.
2. Click the appropriate placemark, line, shape. The info window appears.
3. Click Edit.
4. Choose Rich Text or Edit HTML.
5. If you chose Rich Text mode, click the photo icon above the description field (the last one in the toolbar). Enter the URL of the photo you would like to add.
6. If you chose Edit HTML mode, use the tag to add photos. For example, adds the maps logo to your map with a width of 150 pixels and a height of 55 pixels.
7. Click OK to save your changes.

Sorting Items in Your Map

Once you have added items such as placemarks or lines to your map, you can change the order in which they appear in the left panel. To do this, click and drag any item to the appropriate place in the list at the bottom of the left panel.

Importing KML or GeoRSS to Your Map

Once you have created a map, you can import KML, KMZ or GeoRSS data into your map. To do this, create or open a map and click Import.

Collaborating with Others

Once you have created a map, you can invite individuals or anyone to collaborate on editing your map. To do this:

1. Create or edit a map.
2. Click Collaborate in the left panel. A dialog box appears.
3. Enter or choose the following:
   • Invite persons as collaborators - Enter the email address(s) of anyone you want to collaborate on your map.
   • Message - Type the message you want to appear in the invitation to your collaborators
   • Collaborators may invite others - Check this to allow your collaborators to allow other collaborators
   • Allow anyone to edit this map - Check this to enable any maps users to edit your map
   • Collaborators - You can remove any or all collaborators
4. Click OK. maps sends an invitation to any collaborators you specified.

Sharing Maps

Once you have created a map, you can share it with others. To do this:

1. Open the map you want to share.
2. Click Link to this page in the top right corner of the orange title bar. This puts the map's URL in your browser navigation bar.
3. You can share this URL with your friends by sending it in an email or posting it on your blog or website.
4. You can also click Email in the top right corner of the orange title bar to open your default email software or service with the map URL in the email body.

Public and Unlisted Maps

You can choose to make your maps public or unlisted.

Public maps are maps that you want to publish and share with everyone. Public maps will be included in the search results on maps and Earth. Public maps also appear in your user profile (if you have created one).

Unlisted maps are maps that you only want to share with a few select people. Unlisted maps will not be included in the search results, so they are accessible much like an unlisted phone number -- anyone who knows the specific URL of the map can view it, but there's no directory or search for finding unlisted maps.

To change your public or unlisted setting:

1. Click My Maps. A list of your maps appears. Click the appropriate map to view it.
2. Click Edit title/settings.
3. Choose Public to make this map available to anyone. Choose Unlisted to keep it private.
4. Click Save.

Viewing Your Maps in earth

If you have earth installed on your computer, you can view your maps in earth. To do this:

1. Create or open a custom map.
2. Click the KML or in the orange title bar. maps uploads a KML file to your computer that you can open in earth.

Adding Rich Text or HTML Descriptions maps

By default the descriptions of your map items are in plain text. However, you can use rich text or HTML. To do this:

1. Create or open a map.
2. Click the appropriate placemark, line, shape. The info window appears.
3. Click Edit.
4. Choose Plain Text, Rich Text or Edit HTML.
5. To edit rich text descriptions, select the text and use the icons above the description field:
   
   
6. To use HTML descriptions, add HTML in the description field. Some HTML may be stripped from the description if it is considered unsafe or malicious.
7. Click OK to save your changes.

เอา maps มาทำ Application อะไรได้บ้าง?

ถ้าเราพูดถึงการนำ maps มาใช้งานจริง คนส่วนใหญ่จะคิดว่ามันเหมาะที่จะเอามาใช้แสดงที่ตั้งของห้างร้านหรือบริษัทของเรา เพื่อให้คนที่ใช้บริการเว็บไซต์เรารู้ว่าจะมาหาร้านหรือบริษัทของเราได้อย่างไร

แต่ maps ทำอะไรได้มากกว่านั้นครับ…

ส่วนตัวผมเองพัวพันอยู่กับผู้ขายสินค้าบน eBay ก็ได้รู้ว่าผู้ขายหลายๆ คนมักจะใช้ maps เพื่อตรวจสอบที่อยู่ของลูกค้าก่อนที่จะส่งสินค้า เพื่อดูว่าเป็นที่อยู่ที่มีตัวตนจริงหรือเปล่า ไม่ใช่ส่งสินค้าไปแล้วกลับไม่มีผู้รับ

มีการใช้ตรวจสอบตึกที่มีการติดตั้ง cell site โทรศัพท์มือถือ เพื่อจะได้รู้ว่าถ้าอยากคุยโทรศัพท์ให้เสียงชัดๆ ต้องไปคุยที่ไหน และมีการใช้หาตำแหน่ง Wi-fi Hotspot ว่ามีจุดไหนของเมืองที่สามารถไปใช้บริการอินเทอร์เน็ตไร้สายได้บ้าง

ในอเมริกามีการใช้ maps เพื่อหาเส้นทางการเดินทางที่ดีที่สุด จะได้วางแผนก่อนที่จะเดินทางได้

มีการใช้เก็บสถิติเหตุอาชญากรรม ไฟไหม้ และอุบัติเหตุที่เกิดขึ้นตามจุดต่างๆ แล้วแสดงออกมาเป็นแผนที่ให้เห็น ผมว่า สสส. น่าจะนำไปใช้รณรงค์ช่วงสงกรานต์ได้เลย ทำแผนที่โชว์เลยว่าตอนนี้มีใครตายใครเจ็บที่ถนนเส้นไหนบ้าง

ส่วนในไทยก็มีแผนที่โรงพยาบาล แผนที่ร้านอาหารอร่อยๆ ในเยาวราช และแผนที่อุทยานแห่งชาติทั่วประเทศ

หรืออาจจะเอามาใช้เล่นสนุกๆ ก็ได้ อย่างเว็บกระปุกที่มีบริการกระปุกเจี๊ยวจ๊าว ให้คนเข้ามาแชทคุยกัน โดยมีแผนที่แสดงให้เห็นว่าผู้ที่กำลังแชทอยู่ ออนไลน์จากที่ไหนในประเทศ

ในอนาคตคงจะมี Application แปลกๆ ให้เห็นอีกมากมาย แต่แค่การใช้งานแบบพื้นฐานก็เยี่ยมมากแล้ว

วันนี้แม่ผมถามว่าโรงแรม InterContinental อยู่ตรงไหนของชิดลม ตอนแรกผมเองก็นึกไม่ออกเหมือนกัน รู้จักแต่ชื่อ แต่จำไม่ได้ว่าอยู่ตรงไหน แม่ก็ไปเปิดสมุดหน้าเหลืองเพื่อจะหาเบอร์โทรของโรงแรม จะได้โทรไปถาม ส่วนผมเปิด maps เพียงอึดใจเดียวก็เรียกแม่มาดูภาพหลังคาตึกโรงแรม

เมื่อ maps เข้าใจภาษาไทยมากขึ้น

หนังสือ maps มหัศจรรย์แผนที่ออนไลน์ ยังไม่ทันจะออกจากโรงพิมพ์เลยครับ maps ก็มีการอัพเดทเพื่อคนไทยโดยเฉพาะ

แอบเซ็งเล็กน้อยนะครับ เพราะในหนังสือผมเขียนไปว่า maps ยังรองรับภาษาไทยได้ไม่ดีนัก โดยเฉพาะถ้าค้นหาจังหวัดด้วยภาษาไทยก็จะไม่พบเลย หรือถ้าค้นหาแผนที่ชุมชน (เดิมใช้ชื่อว่า User-created content ต่อมาเปลี่ยนเป็น Community map และแปลเป็นไทยว่าแผนที่ชุมชน) แต่ในตอนนี้ maps รองรับภาษาไทยได้สมบูรณ์แล้วครับ

ความเปลี่ยนแปลงแรกที่เห็นได้ชัดเลยก็คือข้อความต่างๆ ในเว็บถูกแปลเป็นภาษาไทยแล้ว (อาจจะมีบางข้อความที่แปลแล้วยังดูแหม่งๆ หน่อย) หน้า Help ก็เป็นภาษาไทยด้วย แต่ข้อมูลยังน้อยอยู่เมื่อเทียบกับภาษาอังกฤษ

อย่างที่สอง ผมบังเอิญไปเห็นใน Help ว่ามีการลิงค์มาหน้าแรกของ maps ที่ http://maps.google.co.th/ เน้นว่า .co.th นะครับ แต่ตอนนี้ผมยังเรียกเว็บนี้ไม่ได้ คิดว่าอีกไม่นานคงจะใช้งานได้ ซึ่งเว็บนี้คงจะแสดงแผนที่ของประเทศไทยขึ้นมาเลย ต่างกับเว็บ http://maps.google.com/ ที่แสดงแผนที่ของอเมริกาเป็น default

อย่างที่สาม การค้นหาภาษาไทยดีขึ้นมากครับ สมัยก่อนถ้าเราต้องการดูแผนที่ของพิษณุโลก จะต้องค้นด้วยคำว่า Changwat Phitsanulok ถ้าไม่รู้ว่าต้องใช้คำค้นนี้ ก็ต้องอาศัยเลื่อนแผนที่เพื่อหาพิษณุโลกให้พบ แต่ตอนนี้สามารถใช้คำค้นว่า จ.พิษณุโลก ได้เลย หรือในบางจังหวัดไม่ต้องใส่ จ. ก็ได้

นอกจากเรื่องภาษาไทยแล้ว ยังมี “โปรไฟล์ของฉัน” ซึ่งคุณสามารถสร้างโปรไฟล์ของตัวเอง รวมถึงดูโปรไฟล์ของสมาชิกคนอื่นๆ ที่ช่วยกันปักหมุดในแผนที่ชุมชน และดูแผนที่ทั้งหมดที่เขาสร้างขึ้นมาได้ด้วย

การอัพเดทของ maps ในครั้งนี้น่าถูกใจจริงๆ ครับ มีประโยชน์กับคนไทยจริงๆ

Full maps Australia

Yesterday maps Australia went fully functional with driving directions and local business listings. The local business listings are being provided by Truelocal, an Australian business listings provider owned by News Corp. The Australian (A News Corp newspaper) reports that this is part of the Google / News Corp deal from last year which saw Google Ads displayed in MySpace.

Google has been steadily adding Australian support to maps over the last few months, starting with satellite imagery and growing to include local street maps and geocoding, with the Australian maps domain going live just before Australia Day. This latest push means that maps Australia now joins Europe and the US in providing full maps functionality, including full Australian support for maps Mobile (www.google.com/gmm from your phone).

It’s a welcome addition to the Australian local search market that has for years been dominated by Sensis – the ’search’ arm of the formerly government owned telephone monopoly Telstra. Sensis provides Whereis, the incumbent Australian local mapping service, as well as both White (personal) and Yellow (business) pages searches.

Sensis’ Whitepages and Yellowpages have until recently been the listings monopolies, and Whereis (despite or because of its dominance) has been stuck in the Web 1.0 wilderness. I expect the ’in’ for Google will be their excellent maps product, as the current user base for White/Yellow pages searches has been using Sensis for so long it will take some time for Google to start making an impact on local search. But Google’s innovations in mobile search and personalised local search should help it win over market share.

maps in Europe

We're excited to announce that we have just launched beta versions of maps for France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. These sites include the full suite of interactive street maps, driving directions, and integrated local business search. This has been a global effort with Google teams in Paris, Hamburg, Milan, Madrid, New York, Mountain View, Kirkland, Sydney, London, Dublin, and Zurich working together for much of the past year to build a truly "local" product.

Accompanying this release, we have greatly improved high resolution imagery coverage for Europe in both maps and earth. Check out the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Olympiastadion in Berlin, and the Grand Canal in Venice.

To give you a preview of what's to come, we've also rendered street maps for many other countries in Europe. Developers, you can incorporate these maps and imagery into your own websites using the free maps API Version 2.
